Key responsibilities & impact- Lead, grow and enable a team of forward-deployed engineers
- Hire engineers and support their performance, career development and success
- Own Vicoland’s technical direction and technology decisions
- Set architecture across the frontend, backend and infrastructure stack
- Ensure software is scalable, robust and maintainable
- Contribute end-to-end features through business understanding, coding and prototyping
- Use AI to ship high-quality software alongside the team
- Translate business needs into technical roadmaps with Business Development, Product and stakeholders
- Prioritize, scope and make trade-offs explicit
- Ensure team members work end-to-end across concept, design, development, QA, deployment and production monitoring
- Establish engineering standards and quality gates
- Improve AI-assisted development practices, including context engineering, model selection, evaluation, tracing and observability
- Run architectural discussions, code reviews and retrospectives
- Build a culture of ownership, constructive challenge and continuous learning
- Advise the Chief Product Officer and business leadership on technology strategy, build-vs-buy decisions and team setup
Requirements
What you’ll need- Proven people leadership experience, including hiring, performance evaluations, career development and coaching
- Experience leading an engineering team, ideally 3+ engineers
- Impactful technical contribution and continued hands-on coding
- Deep hands-on experience across frontend, backend, data and infrastructure/cloud
- Track record of architecting and shipping production-grade software
- Preferably experience with AI components, including LLMs, embeddings, RAG pipelines, autonomous agents, PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Strong product sense and experience owning a feature or product area end-to-end
- Experience developing AI agents and integrating them into business workflows
- Knowledge of current AI tools, models and trends in AI-assisted software engineering
- Excellent context engineering, including prompting
- Experience with Claude Code or Cursor
- Ability to roll AI-assisted engineering practices out across a team
- Ability to design evaluation sets and use LLM-as-judge or ground-truth data
- Experience with tracing and observability tooling
- Ability to balance autonomy and alignment
- Ability to challenge ideas and drive constructive discussions
- Ability to create psychological safety and give and receive honest feedback
- Residence within ±3 hours of Central European Time
- Full professional proficiency in English at C2 level
- Full professional proficiency in German at C1 level
- Bonus: experience building or scaling engineering teams in a startup or scale-up
- Bonus: experience integrating AI into SaaS business workflows
- Bonus: familiarity with agents, memory systems, vector databases and orchestration frameworks
