Key responsibilities & impact- Design, develop, and maintain features on the existing EHR platform using Ruby on Rails across front-end and back-end layers
- Build and modify user-facing views and interactions
- Implement business logic, services, and data access
- Triage, debug, and resolve production EHR defects through root-cause analysis
- Design and build new features and enhancements from requirements through implementation and testing
- Write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries involving clinical and patient-related data structures
- Participate in sprint planning, daily standups, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives
- Deliver against sprint timelines with product owners, QA, and other engineers
- Write and maintain automated tests and participate in code reviews
- Follow secure coding practices for systems handling protected health information
- Use AI tools for documentation, code generation and refactoring, test data, scripts, diagrams, code execution, and validation
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 3+ years of professional software development experience using Ruby, preferably Ruby on Rails
- Full-stack experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Rails view/UI technologies, Rails, ActiveRecord, and service/business logic layers
- Strong SQL skills, including complex queries, query optimization, and relational database schemas such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Experience resolving defects in live production applications and performing root-cause analysis
- Experience developing new features within an existing, mature codebase
- Exposure to software development in a healthcare environment, ideally involving an EHR or clinical system
- Experience working in an agile/scrum environment with tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps
- Experience with automated testing frameworks such as RSpec or Capybara and Git-based version control
- Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Direct experience working on or supporting an EHR platform such as Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, or similar
- Familiarity with HL7 or FHIR
- Familiarity with HIPAA and PHI handling requirements
- Exposure to pharmacy or other clinical workflows
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern front-end frameworks or Rails tooling such as Turbo, Stimulus, or React
