Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and grow the Backend Platform team by hiring, coaching, and retaining engineers
- Define the platform’s technical vision and roadmap
- Partner with product engineering teams to identify high-impact platform investments
- Guide shared frameworks for database access, session management, caching, request handling, and streaming
- Work with Infrastructure to evolve database, replica, and storage-system usage
- Build a data access layer supporting migration between storage systems
- Improve read-replica usage and move high-volume data off primary systems
- Load test systems and implement circuit breakers, timeouts, retries, idempotency, and noisy-neighbor isolation
- Partner with Security and product teams on customer-data handling, workspace isolation, and production safeguards
- Establish modular boundaries, enforceable contracts, and automated checks for human and AI development
- Reduce latency, improve observability, and make production issues easier to diagnose
- Lead architecture discussions, review critical code, prototype, and guide technical tradeoffs
- Partner with Infrastructure, Developer Platform, Model Infrastructure, Security, and product engineering leaders through rollout and adoption
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of software engineering experience
- 3+ years of engineering management experience
- Track record of building strong teams and delivering complex backend or platform systems
- Deep technical judgment in backend architecture and distributed systems
- Knowledge of database access patterns, concurrency, caching, API design, and performance
- Experience building shared libraries, frameworks, or internal platforms adopted by multiple engineering teams
- Technical depth to engage in design and code reviews, investigate systems problems, and guide migrations across a large codebase
- Experience with Python and frameworks such as Flask or FastAPI is valuable
- Track record of hiring, coaching, and developing engineers
- Experience embedding reliability, observability, and security into shared systems
- Clear communication and ability to lead across team boundaries
- Serious, hands-on use of AI coding agents
- Must be based in San Francisco or willing to relocate and work from the office 3 days per week
