Key responsibilities & impact- Set architectural direction across multiple teams
- Own the technical architecture and roadmap for a critical platform domain spanning multiple services and teams
- Lead design and implementation of highly available, fault-tolerant, distributed, event-driven Java systems at Walmart scale
- Drive and document cross-team architecture decisions and tradeoffs involving availability, consistency, latency, and cost
- Identify and eliminate systemic reliability, scalability, and performance risks
- Establish telemetry standards, alerting strategy, incident response frameworks, and blameless root-cause-analysis practices
- Lead technical-debt reduction and modernization initiatives across teams and services
- Mentor and grow Senior Engineers into technical leaders
- Raise engineering quality through design reviews, architecture reviews, and engineering best practices
- Partner with Product, Principal Engineers, Directors, and senior stakeholders to translate ambiguous business problems into technical strategy and milestones
- Build and operate Warehouse Management Systems for Walmart’s U.S. eCommerce Fulfillment Center network
- Support platforms serving High Velocity Fulfillment Centers, Next Generation Automated Fulfillment Centers, and Walmart Fulfillment Services
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area; OR 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
- 10+ years of software engineering experience (or equivalent depth), preferably in Java
- Expert-level experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, and messaging systems such as Kafka
- Deep hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL datastores
- Experience making schema and data-model decisions affecting multiple downstream consumers
- Proven ownership of production systems at scale
- Experience driving reliability strategy, diagnosing complex cross-service incidents, and leading performance tuning initiatives
- Exceptional system design and architecture skills
- Experience mentoring Senior Engineers and influencing technical direction across teams
- Experience working in fast-paced Agile environments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience presenting architecture and design to senior technical and business stakeholders
- Ability to leverage AI tooling/agents to accelerate development, troubleshooting, and team-wide productivity
- Preferred: deep Azure experience, including Cosmos DB at scale, and Kafka expertise across high-throughput, multi-team systems
- Preferred: supply chain or fulfillment domain expertise, including WMS/WES/FC operations
- Preferred: knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices
