Key responsibilities & impact- Own the engineering team's technical delivery and ensure committed work lands on time and to client standards
- Run the engineering team day to day and track progress across all work
- Size work with the Product Owner and Delivery Manager before commitment
- Partner with the Delivery Manager on dependencies, technical risk and team capacity
- Raise slippage early with recovery plans
- Own delivery metrics and report them weekly to the CTO and CEO
- Embed build-it, run-it, own-it practices across the team
- Own production across both platforms and the on-call rota
- Set, publish and enforce standards for code review, testing and releases, including AI-written code
- Hire, onboard and performance-manage engineers
- Write code for 20–30% of working time
- Run planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives
- Report to the CTO and work directly with the CEO on delivery
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least four years leading software engineers in a technical delivery capacity
- Experience leading a team of five to ten engineers on a live SaaS product
- Record of shipping committed work to agreed dates
- Experience improving an underperforming team
- Experience building estimates using decomposition, ranges, confidence and contingency
- Experience measuring and improving estimate accuracy
- Current, hands-on skill with Next.js, React and TypeScript
- Current, hands-on skill with Laravel and PHP
- Experience using AI-first tools such as Claude Code
- Comfortable reading code, reviewing pull requests and challenging estimates or designs on technical merits
- Working understanding of CI/CD, environments, releases and running production on AWS
- Experience handling performance conversations and formal performance processes
- Ability to build team accountability without micromanaging
- Experience making engineers responsible for production support
- Must be eligible to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship
- Must hold a valid visa or UK residency
- Must be currently based in the UK
- Prepared to undergo high-level security clearance
- Nice to have: regulated enterprise client experience, legacy platform modernisation or migration, CodeIgniter or other legacy PHP frameworks, event technology, ISO 27001 or client security review experience
